Don't forget the telcommuter in your life. What's on my Christmas list.
>> 12.01.2008

Ahh, it's Cyber Monday (I never cared for the phrase personally, sounds like the world is taking a day off to surf for porn or something). Chances are you have a part-time or full-time telecommuter on your list. Thought I'd share my Christmas list to give you some ideas for the remote worker in your life. And, if you feel gracious, I wouldn't object to actually recieving any of these in my mailbox.
Kindle: Amazon's Wireless Reading Device, $359. I know the Kindle is yesterday's news in tech gadget circles and has some downsides in cost per downloads. But, supposedly reading from Kindle is like reading from paper. I have constant headaches from all of my online reading and love the portability.
Clocky, $50. An alarm clock for the non-morning person. I've never been a morning person. Since I started telecommuting with no reason to wake up, my sleep schedule has gotten ridiculous. Clocky gives you one try to wake up and then rolls off your nightstand and hides around your room until you get up.
Anything that gets me out of the house, again priceless. Movie theater tickets, restaurant certificates, or a spa gift certificate would all force me to leave the house. Better yet, plan a day to go out with me. I spend much more time talking to people on twitter or forums than I do with my real-life friends. But, as a computer-obsessed teleworker, making the first move in planning a date isn't something I think about. Force me to leave!
Pantone flash drive, $9.99 to $79.99. Backing up my work has never been a strong suit. I bought my first flash drive last month. But, these are customizable and stylish. You can engrave up to two lines. Your name and contact info would probably be a good idea.
A Charity Gift Card, varies. I admit it, I sometimes cry at the evening news. It's the only TV program that makes me cry. I hear about starving children in some far away country or see images of horrible natural disasters and wish I had more to give. With a charity gift card, I could donate to the charity of my choice the next time I read about shortages at a food bank or see a devastating house fire. At TisBest, you can customize your card by uploading your own image, and for the environmentally friendly, skip the plastic card and send an e-card.
What's on your wish list?
Update: Seems remote workers want a lot of stuff. Opening my reader, I found more lists for your gift-giving inspiration. Steph, a freelance writer and self-professed "word nerd," posted stocking stuffer ideas for writers. WebWorkerDaily, one of the newest additions to my daily read list, fills its wish list with plenty for the geek in all of us.

Kristine..hope your wishes come true :)
That's a pretty good wish list. I especially understand the ones about getting out more!
I totally love "Clocky". I linked to your post, hope you don't mind.
Lisa H. I'm flattered you linked to me. Thanks so much! I really wish I had the clocky now. The weather is yucky, I don't want to get up early.
Cindy- I'm not holding my breath. My family and I decided not to exchange this year.
Kat- I know I think I need to make a real effort and make a round of phone calls. My friends gave up on getting me to leave "work."
I would have to say I want the Kindle! I love to read!

I thought about getting you clocky even before I read this. Weird.
I like the wish list. I would love to get "Clocky" for my wife (she is not a morning person in any way), but she'll probably kill the clock, and then me.
I have a flash drive, but don't use it for backing up data (external hard drive for that). The flash drive makes it extremely easy for me to transfer a lot of data between computers.
Paul, My sister had said she's getting the clocky for me for about three years. She was the one who first brought it to my attention, thanks Jennifer. But, I digress, glad you appreciated the list. I need an external hard drive, but am taking baby steps.
Loved your list! I especially like Clocky and the "anything to get me out of the house"! I am right there with you on that one, LOL
BTW, stumbled this post--really enjoyed it!
LOL Clocky sounds like such a trouble maker!! I love the idea though.
Clocky is my kind of clock! I need something to make me get out of bed. By the way I really like your header.

I picture that "Clocky" thing running around my bedroom like a chinchilla and me killing it in a sleep deprivation induced rage ;)
I can't wait to start my telecommuting career next week!
Thanks again for getting me "in-the-know" and hooking me up with an awesome work from home opportunity. I will not miss driving to work as often during the winter weather ;)
One of the greatest benefits of telecommuting is knowing when you leave your home you will do so to go to a destination you WANT to go to -- visiting friends/family, shopping, movies, dining out, etc. I do not miss the daily traffic hassles I put up with when I worked outside of the home. However, I agree with you about getting out of the house. As a teleworker I have found that I need to pay attention to my habits and avoid cabin fever.
One gift that's always a hit is a "special outing gift basket." I give them to my brother and sister-in-law every year. Its a crafty way to give an entire evening of fun to someone you love. Below is what I use in mine:
+ an inexpensive basket from the craft section
+ shredded paper, tissue paper, etc
+ a modest gift certificte
+ a card
+ small coordinating candy and/or decorative items
Example: Using an inexpensive gift basket (Italian themed if possible), red/white/green tissue paper, a $15 gift certificate for pizza, a $10 gift certificate for movie rentals and a bag of microwave popcorn to create a "Dinner & a Movie" basket to give to a special couple. Its a fun and easy way to give an entire evening of fun! Don't limit your ideas! Drop a gift certificate for a mainicure, a few emery board and a bottle of nail polish into a gift basket and give a special girlfriend a day of beauty. The ideas are endless!
The Kindle looks neat. How much do the books/text run for it? Can it do other things than just offer text (like play sudoko)?
You have an award at Confessions of a Baltimore Housewife, by the way :)
Hi Lori, Thanks for thinking of me with the award. You reminded me of how neglectful I've been to others who awarded me. I'm ashamed and will post your award and the others soon.
I did more research on the Kindle. Books ae only $9.99 so that's reasonable. The problem is you have to pay to read blogs and newspapers usually free online.
Nicky, I know, clocky sounds so high maintenance!
Iris, What an awesome idea! I wish I had the creativity you obviously possess.
From one 20something telecommuter to another: Loving the wish list! I want the Kindle too...very cool. The Iphone tops my list this year, sick of the crackberry! :)
